A mid-year transfer is very doable in the UAE. Here is how it works.

First, the paperwork: the Transfer Certificate

To move a child between schools in the UAE, you usually need a Transfer Certificate (TC) from the current school. Requirements vary by emirate and curriculum, but the new school will tell you exactly what it needs. Start this early — schools can be slow to release documents, especially near term breaks.

You will typically also need:

• Recent school reports
• Passport, visa and Emirates ID copies for the child
• Birth certificate
• Vaccination records

Timing: when transfers are easiest

• Between terms is smoothest — your child starts fresh with the rest of the class.
• Mid-term is possible but can be more unsettling and depends entirely on seat availability.
• Exam years (Year 11/12 or equivalent) need extra care — curricula and exam boards must line up, or your child could face gaps. If you are switching between British, American or IB systems, confirm the pathway before you commit.

The biggest hurdle: finding a seat
