Mid-Year School Transfers in the UAE: What Parents Need to Know
A practical guide to mid-year school transfers in the UAE — transfer certificates, timing, finding a seat, refunds and helping your child settle in.
The job started sooner than planned. Or the current school just is not working. Either way, you are facing a mid-year move — and worrying about seats, paperwork and how your child will cope joining a class that has already settled.
A mid-year transfer is very doable in the UAE. Here is how it works.
First, the paperwork: the Transfer Certificate
To move a child between schools in the UAE, you usually need a Transfer Certificate (TC) from the current school. Requirements vary by emirate and curriculum, but the new school will tell you exactly what it needs. Start this early — schools can be slow to release documents, especially near term breaks.
You will typically also need:
- Recent school reports
- Passport, visa and Emirates ID copies for the child
- Birth certificate
- Vaccination records
Timing: when transfers are easiest
- Between terms is smoothest — your child starts fresh with the rest of the class.
- Mid-term is possible but can be more unsettling and depends entirely on seat availability.
- Exam years (Year 11/12 or equivalent) need extra care — curricula and exam boards must line up, or your child could face gaps. If you are switching between British, American or IB systems, confirm the pathway before you commit.
The biggest hurdle: finding a seat
Mid-year, you are looking for a specific year group with a free place. Popular schools and year groups may have none. Be flexible on your shortlist and move quickly when a seat appears — search UAE schools by area and year group, then add options to Compare.
A step-by-step plan
- Confirm the reason and the timing. Are you moving cities, or moving schools within the same area?
- Shortlist schools with likely availability in your child's exact year group.
- Contact admissions directly to ask about open seats and assessment dates — use our questions to ask before enrolling checklist on every call.
- Request the Transfer Certificate from the current school as soon as you have an offer in sight.
- Check the refund position at the current school — fees already paid may be partly refundable under set rules. Ask in writing.
- Confirm the offer and deposit, then sort transport and uniform.
Helping your child settle
Joining mid-year is harder socially than academically. Ask the new school about its buddy or settling-in system. Keep routines steady at home, and give it a few weeks — most children find their feet faster than parents fear.
