A relocation guide to Dubai's private school system for expat parents — how schooling is structured, the KHDA, timelines, fees and how to find a place.

The job offer is exciting. The logistics are less so. Somewhere between shipping the car and sorting visas, you realise you have no idea how schooling actually works in Dubai — and the school year may not line up with your move.

Here is the system explained, step by step, for families relocating with children.

First, the big picture

Almost all expat children in Dubai attend private schools. There are over 200 of them, offering more than a dozen curricula — British, American, IB, Indian, French and more. They are regulated by the KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority), which inspects schools and publishes ratings — see KHDA ratings explained for what those labels mean.

Public schools follow the UAE Ministry of Education curriculum in Arabic and are mainly for Emirati children, so most expat families do not consider them.

How the school year runs

The academic year typically runs late August to late June or early July, with two main term breaks. British and IB schools use this pattern. This matters for your timing: if you arrive mid-year, you will be looking at a mid-year transfer, which has its own quirks.

The relocation timeline that works

  1. 3–6 months out: decide on a curriculum and a rough budget. Draw up a longlist — choosing a curriculum in the GCC can help if you are new to the options.
  2. 2–4 months out: narrow to a shortlist near your likely neighbourhood. Contact schools about availability — browse Dubai schools by area and fee band.
  3. 2–3 months out: complete applications and any assessments. Some schools assess remotely.
  4. On offer: pay the deposit to secure the seat. Lining up the visa and Emirates ID for your child runs alongside this.
  5. Before term: sort transport, uniform and the settling-in plan.

What you will need to enrol

  • Passport copies and visa or residency documents for the child
  • Birth certificate
  • Recent school reports and any transfer certificate from the current school
  • Vaccination records
  • Passport photos

Requirements vary by school, so confirm the exact list early.

A few things first-timers underestimate

  • Waiting lists are real. Popular schools and year groups fill up. Apply early and keep a backup.
  • Location drives daily life. A long commute in heavy traffic wears the whole family down. Weigh school location against home and work — our guide to best areas in Dubai for families can help anchor your search.
  • Fees come with extras. Budget for registration, deposit, transport and uniform on top of tuition — use the fee calculator and read international school fees in the UAE.
